Malta’s Epic Rise to Become one of the World's Leading iGaming Hubs

30 August 2021

Malta, the tiny island nation in the middle of the Mediterranean, is now home to 10% of the worlds iGaming companies, establishing itself as a major iGaming hub. But how did this tiny island, which was fought over for centuries, manage to attract such powerful gaming companies to its shores?

In 2004, Malta became a member of the European Union, and by 2008, it had implemented the Euro currency, paving the way for increased international trade. This was the first step in securing Malta’s place as an international, forward thinking nation looking to attract increased wealth and prosperity to its shores.

Malta made it easy for iGaming companies to understand their rules and regulations while other countries struggled to make their rules clear and concise. Coupled with its low tax rate for businesses, as low as 5% in many cases, Malta quickly established itself as the place to set up an iGaming operation.

Of Course there are many other benefits for iGaming companies to set up shop in Malta. More than 80% speak English fluently and it is infact one of the countries official languages. The internet and office infrastructure is also on par with international hubs such as London and Cyprus with shiny new office blocks popping up all over the island.

Education in Malta is of a high standard and university is free. So the workforce is well educated with many of the skills needed by iGaming companies.

With a high standard of living, the great all year-round weather, and the business advantages iGaming companies can enjoy once here, it is no surprise that Malta has become the leading destination for iGaming companies to set up shop.
