Types of Programmers You’ll Come Across in The World of Gaming

11 March 2019

Their reputation may precede them, but contrary to popular belief, there are different types of programmers - and we’re not referring to whether they work in frontend, backend, full stack or betting software. And no, they do not all dwell in a dark cave (although we do have a soft spot for those). Here are a few types of programmers you’ll likely come across in the beautiful world of coding.

The Martyr

You’ve heard the legend of the workaholic who takes pride in practically spending his life at his desk, as can be seen by the pizza boxes left lying on it. He has found his vocation and has chosen to entirely dedicate his life to it. The problem is that The Martyr expects everyone else to sell their soul to the mighty code, and guilts them into actually leaving work when their shift is up.

The Bum

He smokes like a chimney, drinks and swears like a sailor and rolls up to work looking like he’s just rolled out of bed. However, what he lacks in grooming and finesse, he makes up for with his stellar work.

Throwback Tarzan

Sporting long hair, black jeans and a Led Zeppelin t-shirt, this 40 something-year old is a living throwback. He’s a self-taught coder who grew up tinkering with amps and equipment, and is somewhat of a rebel who everyone wants to work with – once they begrudgingly accept that that means being ready to get into philosophical debates before the morning espresso has even kicked in.

Eric The Church Mouse

This guy is so quiet, most of the time you’ll forget he’s even there until you discover the evidence of his work in the late afternoon. Any project this lone wolf works on runs smoothly, and Eric can be relied on to get his job done without any form of pep talk.

Corner-Cutting Carl

This one falls on the slob side and doesn’t quite exude passion for his job – or anything else for that matter. And despite the corner-cutting, it somehow takes him longer to produce sub-par work.

Tim Trendy

A youngster who is on the constant lookout for the next best tool, progressive web app, mobile phone, or electronic DJ, the first type of Tim Trendy forms part of the new generation - the bright future of coding. Everyone loves Tim Trendy, even though his flashy sneakers and headphones might serve as a deterrent at first. The other version of Tim Trendy is the one that spends thousands on workshops, conferences and tutorials but never manages to put a single app in production.

Sam Sage

Although the sage has a lot of experience, with age on his side, the sage is clueless about the latest trends in software (unlike Tim Trendy). Sam Sage doesn’t quite pull his weight in the team, leaving the younger team members to do most of the work, while getting overpaid himself. This type pretty much knows one language and never attempts to learn another - and why would they need to when C and C+ + do the job just fine?
